Resumo A sexagem das espécies é uma ferramenta importante para o manejo populacional. Em tartarugas, cágados e jabutis, a sexagem geralmente é feita de acordo com características secundárias, como morfologia do plastrão ou técnicas de eversão do falo. Neste artigo, apresentamos o método de eversão do falo e comparamos sua eficiência com outras técnicas existentes. Este novo método visa encurtar o tempo de manejo e reduzir os efeitos colaterais físicos nos animais, promovendo o manejo clínico e reprodutivo do cágado-de-barbicha (Phrynops geoffroanus) e espécies relacionadas. Uma amostra de cinquenta indivíduos foi coletada na região central do estado do Piauí, Nordeste do Brasil. O método proposto consiste em remover a cabeça de sua posição de repouso. Os métodos que obtiveram índice de sucesso superior a 80% foram comparados entre si quanto ao tempo de estimulação necessário para a eversão do falo. O método aqui proposto alcançou 100% de eficiência na determinação do sexo de espécimes com comprimento de carapaça linear entre 10 e 34 cm. Além disso, quando comparado ao segundo método mais eficiente, reduziu substancialmente o tempo necessário para o manejo dos espécimes (91%), evitando possíveis sequelas nos indivíduos manuseados.

Abstract The sexing of species is an important tool for population management. In tortoises and turtles, sexing is usually done according to secondary characteristics, such as plastron morphology or phallus eversion techniques. In this paper, we present the phallus eversion method and compare its efficiency to other existing techniques. This new method aims at shortening the management time and reducing the physical aftereffects on the animals, fostering the clinical and reproductive management of Geoffroy’s side-necked turtle (Phrynops geoffroanus) and related species. A sample of fifty individuals was taken in the central region of Piauí state, Northeastern Brazil. The proposed method consisted of moving the head from its resting position. The methods achieving a success rate higher than 80% were compared to each other as for the stimulation time required for phallus eversion. The method as here proposed achieved 100% efficiency in the sex determination of specimens with a linear carapace length between 10 and 34 cm. Also, when compared to the second most efficient method, it substantially reduced the time needed for managing the specimens (91%), avoiding possible sequelae in the individuals handled.

Abstract Morphological studies provide knowledge that allow us to understand how animals interact with the natural environment or the captivity. The goal of this study was to describe the origin and antimeric distribution of lumbosacral plexus nerves in Didelphis aurita and D. albiventris. Fourteen adult cadavers of D. aurita, seven males and seven females, and 13 adult cadavers of D. albiventris, nine males and four females were used. The specimens were sexed, identified, fixed and dissected until the origins of the lumbosacral plexus nerves were exposed. Data were represented as absolute frequency and simple percentage. The lumbosacral plexuses derived a trunk for the femoral and obturator nerves from the ventral branches of L3-L4 (75%) in D. aurita, and in D. albiventris the femoral nerve of L3-L4 (73.1%) and the obturator nerve of L3-L4 (61.5%). In both species, formation of a lumbosacral trunk derived from L5-L6-S1 occurred in 78.6% of D. aurita and 61.5% of D. albiventris. The origin and distribution of lumbosacral plexus nerves of the studied species present similarities with domestic and wild eutherian mammals.

Resumo Estudos morfológicos fornecem conhecimentos que permitem entender o modo como os animais interagem com o ambiente natural ou em cativeiro. O objetivo desse estudo foi descrever a origem e distribuição antimérica dos nervos do plexo lombossacral de Didelphis aurita e D. albiventris. Foram utilizados 14 cadáveres adultos de D. aurita, sete machos e sete fêmeas, e 13 cadáveres adultos de D. albiventris, nove machos e quatro fêmeas. Os espécimes foram sexados, identificados, fixados e dissecados até a exposição das origens dos nervos do plexo lombossacral. Os dados foram representados em frequência absoluta e percentual simples. Os plexos lombossacrais derivaram um tronco para os nervos femoral e obturatório dos ramos ventrais de L3-L4 (75%) em D. aurita, e em D. albiventris o nervo femoral de L3-L4 (73,1%) e nervo obturatório de L3-L4 (61,5%). Nas duas espécies, ocorreu formação de um tronco lombossacral derivado de L5-L6-S1 em 78,6% no D. aurita e em 61,5% no D. albiventris. A origem e distribuição dos nervos do plexo lombossacral das espécies estudadas apresentam similaridades com os mamíferos eutérios domésticos e silvestres.

Resumo Estudos de morfologia fornecem conhecimentos que permitem entender o modo como os animais interagem com o ambiente natural ou em cativeiro. O objetivo desse estudo foi descrever a origem e a distribuição antimérica dos nervos do plexo braquial e os músculos inervados em Bradypus variegatus. Foram utilizadas 12 preguiças adultas com mortes de diferentes causas naturais no Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Os espécimes foram fixados com perfusão de solução de formaldeído a 10%. Os dados foram representados em frequência absoluta e percentual simples. Os plexos braquiais originaram os nervos supraescapular, subescapular, radial, mediano, ulnar e musculocutâneo para a musculatura intrínseca e os nervos peitoral cranial, peitoral caudal, torácico lateral, torácico longo, toracodorsal para a musculatura extrínseca. Os ramos espinhais envolvidos na formação do plexo foram C8, C9, C10, T1 e T2. Os ramos que mais contribuíram em suas formações foram C8 e C9.

Abstract Morphology studies provide knowledge that allow us to understand how animals interact with the natural environment or in captivity. The aim of this study was to describe the origin and antimeric distribution of brachial plexus nerves and the innervated muscles in Bradypus variegatus. Twelve adults three-toed sloths were used, arising from the Serra dos Órgãos National Park and Wild Animals Rehabilitation Center of Estácio de Sá University and donated to Animal and Human Anatomy Department of the Rural Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. The specimens were fixed in formaldehyde solution for infusion to 10%. Data were presented in absolute and percentage frequency simple. The brachial plexus originated the suprascapular, subscapular, radial, median, ulnar and musculocutaneous nerves for the intrinsic musculature and the cranial pectoral nerves, caudal pectoral, lateral thoracic, long thoracic, thoracodorsal nerves for the extrinsic musculature. The spinal branches involved in the formation of the plexus were C8, C9, C10, T1 andT2. The branches that contributed most were ventral spines C8 and C9.

Rabbits have been used as urologic models in many studies. The aim of this study was to characterize the renal morphology and anatomical variations of the renal pedicle in rabbit. The research ethics committee of Rio de Janeiro Federal Rural University approved this study. The animals were obtained from the university's necropsy unit. Dissections were performed in 50 adult rabbits, male and females, without macroscopic renal pathology. Kidney measurements were made with a digital caliper: length, width, and thickness. The length and origin of the renal arteries and main branches and length of the renal veins were also determined. The terminology of Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria was followed. The mean and standard deviation of the length of the right kidney was 3.150±0.2588 cm in males and 3.127±0.3769 cm in females and in the left kidney was 3.083±0.0818 cm in males and 3.162±0.0848 cm in females. The width of the right kidney was 1.933±0.0848 cm in males and 1.996±0.0680 cm in females and in the left kidney was 1.850±0.0659 cm in males and 2.004±0.0940 cm in females. There was no significant difference in the measurements between the two sexes and antimeres and in the measures of renal vessels in relation to sex, but the left artery and renal vein were always larger than the right in both sexes. The results of the present study are expected to contribute to the body of knowledge in the field of comparative and applied anatomy.

Los conejos se han utilizado como modelos urológicos en muchas investigaciones. El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar la morfología renal y variaciones anatómicas del pedículo renal en el conejo. El comité de ética de la investigación de Río de Janeiro Universidad Federal Rural aprobó este estudio. Los animales se obtuvieron de unidad de necropsia de la universidad. Las disecciones se realizaron en 50 conejos adultos, machos y hembras, sin patología renal macroscópica. Se realizaron con un calibrador digital las siguientes mediciones en el riñón : longitud, ancho y grosor. También se determinaron la longitud y el origen de las arterias renales y ramas principales y longitud de las venas renales. Se siguió la terminología de Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria. La Media y DE de la longitud del riñón derecho fue 3,150±0,2588 cm en machos y 3,127±0,3769 cm en hembras y en el riñón izquierdo fue 3,083±0,0818 cm en machos y 3,162±0,0848 cm en hembras. El ancho del riñón derecho fue 1,933±0,0848 cm en machos y 1,996±0,0680 cm en las hembras y en el riñón izquierdo fue 1,850±0,0659 cm en machos y 2,004±0,0940 cm en hembras. No hubo diferencias significativas en las mediciones entre los dos sexos y los antímeros, así como en las medidas de los vasos renales en relación con el sexo; pero la arteria y vena renal izquierda fueron siempre mayores que las del lado derecho en ambos sexos. Se espera con los resultados del presente estudio contribuir al conocimientos en el campo de la anatomía comparada y aplicada.
